Abstract

© 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. The ability to produce three-dimensional (3D) images with full depth cues makes holography a focus of attention in the last decades. Despite the slow commercialization, breakthroughs of holography technology emerge all the time. This article gives a brief overview of the history and principle of holography for digital holographic displays, with the development on the spatial light modulators in use and significant demonstrations of various holographic displays as well as the hologram synthesis algorithms. The applications of holographic 3D displays and holographic waveguides in head-mounted displays (HMDs) are also introduced.
