Abstract

Energy analysis of agricultural systems has failed to live up to the expectations of its early proponents. A number of important theoretical and methodological issues remain unresolved including the definition of the system boundary, the treatment of labour, and the interpretation of the output from energy analysis. These problems may be attributed, at least in part, to confusions over the role of energy in agricultural systems. If the technique is to develop beyond mere taxonomy then a more coherent framework for the analysis of energy in agricultural systems needs to be developed. This paper describes a simple model of the use of energy in agriculture which is used to examine a number of these controversies.
