Abstract

Base pressure and aerodynamic loss have been measured in a wind tunnel model simulating a transonic turbine blade. The measurements show that a major part of the loss depends upon the value of the base pressure. This loss occurs downstream of the trailing edge although it is pre-determined by conditions on the blade. It is found that the shape of the surface boundary layers before they separate from the trailing edge and, under certain flow conditions, the back pressure, are important factors influencing the value of base pressure. These facts were neglected in all previous experimental and theoretical investigations.
