Abstract

The Maugis analysis of adhesive circular contacts between spheres is repeated for the band contacts between cylinders. It is found that the same Maugis/Tabor parameter governs the transition between rigid cylinder behaviour and JKR-like behaviour, with the same critical values; however, the pull-off force is not a simple multiple of RAy as with circular contacts, but varies from.
