Abstract

This paper investigates the two dimensional effects and design criteria for cylindrical pin fins having internal heat generation density. The analysis carried out examines the solution of the optimal problem and determines the criteria of usefulness, effectiveness, and optimization of the fin involving the non dimensional Biot number. Based on these criteria, the conditions that allow the optimal fin to be manufactured and used will be extracted. After having specified the quantitative contribution of the thermal sources, graphs of the transfer (removal) number as a function of Biot number are generated. The graphical data are presented in polynomial form and thus are generally applicable and can be used by fins designers without the need to conscript the complex mathematical equations and details. Finally application of the theoretical results to practical problems is demonstrated, investigating two different fin materials, iron and aluminum. © 2012 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l.
