This paper presents the findings of an empirical study that was designed to investigate the usage and requirements of business performance measurement in organisations operating in today’s digital age. Furthermore, the study was designed to discover whether there are any significant differences in emphasis between internet companies and traditional companies. For this purpose three different types of companies were analysed: bricks-and-mortar, clicks-and-mortar and dot.coms. The findings reveal a widespread interest in performance measurement and management among all participants as well as a stark difference in emphasis. © 2001 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
