Abstract

© 2017 by Andrea Masi, Jiahuan Cui, Paul Tucker. Highly resolved large-eddy simulation (LES) is used to investigate the characteristic of a three-dimensional boundary layer separating from a backward rounded ramp. The three-dimensionality of the boundary layer is due to the presence of a flow component which is perpendicular to the streamline direction, causing the streamlines to curve. The skewness of the flow is caused by the introduction of a source term in the z-momentum equation. The resulting flow features are more similar to engineering applications, such as the flow over a swept aircraft wing, where the crossow is generated by the decomposition of the free stream velocity in two components over its surface. The results show that a skewness of the flow does not significantly affect the overall properties of the boundary layer. In particular, separation and reattachment are found to not greatly differ from those observed in simulations without crossow. Moreover, the turbulent characteristics of the flow are not inuenced by the three-dimensionality of the boundary layer. The paper also provides a comparison of the results obtained by LES and three RANS methods (based on SA, SST and RSM turbulence models), and the results constitute a valuable data set for investigating turbulence-closure proposals for three-dimensional boundary layers.
