Abstract

When completed in 2016, Dalston Lane will be the tallest platform CLT structure in the world. In this paper the motivation and drivers for the project are considered, as is the design process that resulted in a highly coordinated fabrication model. Details of the numerous design challenges investigated by the design team, including stability, fire and connections, are outlined, alongside testing of floor plate stiffeners with Cambridge University. It is concluded that to construct taller buildings using the same design principles it will be necessary to undertake further engineering design and research.
