Abstract

The effect of compression reinforcement was studied on the shear strength of reinforced concrete bridge beams. It was found that the addition of compression reinforcement gave a marginal increase in shear capacity for beams without stirrups by allowing a more favourable stress distribution. For beams with stirrups, any shear capacity enhancement was only due to the increased confinement of the web concrete provided by the reinforcement cage.
