Abstract

Welcome to the International Conference on Advances in Concrete Technology, Materials, and Construction Practices. This conference is a significant event in the culmination of a two-year programme of research funded by the British Council under the UK-India Education Research Initiative (UKIERI) and titled ‘Development of structural concrete with the help of plastic waste as partial replacement for sand’. The project partners are Goa Engineering College (India), Government Polytechnic Bicholim (India), and the University of Bath (UK), with ACC Limited as technology partner It is a great honour for this event to be held at the Goa Engineering College, which this year celebrates its 50th Anniversary. It is a happy coincidence that the University of Bath (UK) also celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2016. This joint research project has important implications for India and many other parts of the world where environmental concerns have led to severe restrictions on dredging for sand, leading to direct impacts on the economics of concrete construction. At the present time waste plastic is rarely recycled in India, with a large proportion simply disposed of in landfill, which brings further environmental concerns. The research project aimed to find a solution to both problems by utilising processed waste plastic as a partial replacement for fine sand in concrete mixes. You will find in the proceedings a number of papers on this topic. This initial focus has subsequently grown, as reflected in the breadth of the conference themes that you will find in these proceedings. Research from India and around the world is presented in eight separate themes, each of which provides interesting papers and new advances in concrete technology, materials, and construction practices. The expanding remit of our joint research program reflects the economic, environmental, and social importance of concrete to the global construction industry. The organizing committees are deeply indebted to our Keynote Speakers, guests, authors, and delegates for their contributions to this conference and to the review committees for their hard work in reviewing each of the full papers. Further thanks are due to Dr. V.N. Shet, Principal of Goa Engineering College, Mr. Subhash Borkar, Principal, Government Polytechnic, Bicholim, Dr. Narayan V. Nayak, Principal Advisor, Gammon India Limited, Dr. Mangesh Korgaonker, Director General NICMAR, Pune, Dr. Deepankar Choudhury, Professor, IIT Bombay, Professor Peter Walker, Director of the BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials at the University of Bath, all our sponsors for supporting this conference, and to the British Council for funding the initial work that has led us here.
