Abstract

Limits on the source coding exponents of zero-delay finite-memory (ZDFM) lossy source codes was studied. It was shown that for a given memoryless source, a suitably-designed encoder that shares memoryless scalar quantizers is a good as any time-varying ZDFM codes. A dual result was obtained when the roles of rate and distortion were interchanged.
