Microbial induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is an innovative soil improvement technique which is capable of enhancing the strength and stiffness of soils, and controlling their hydraulic conductivity. These engineering properties of soils after MICP treatment are affected by many factors, such as CaCO3 content, amount and distribution in the soils. Correlations between CaCO3 properties and soil engineering properties have been studied by macroscale testing methods. Several of those studies are reviewed. Microscopic studies of MICP processes are introduced to discuss the precise role of microbes and CaCO3 in the MICP process. A new method that utilizes a microfluidic chip is introduced in which the MICP process is directly observed using a microscope. Several experimental examples using the new method are presented to demonstrate that the injected bacteria and generated CaCO3 can be observed spatially and temporally. It is suggested that this new method can be a useful device for optimizing the MICP process.
